What is an SSL Certificate?

An SSL certificate is a digital document that is used to create a secure connection between a website and a user’s browser. It encrypts data that is transferred between the two, ensuring that sensitive information is kept safe and secure. This makes it an essential component of any website that deals with sensitive data, such as payment information or personal information.

Why is an SSL Certificate Important?

An SSL certificate is especially important for websites that deal with sensitive information. It ensures that data is kept safe and secure, protecting both the website and the user. Without an SSL certificate, data can be easily intercepted and stolen. Furthermore, sites without an SSL certificate may be penalized by search engines, leading to a drop in ranking.

How To Install an SSL Certificate Using Virtualmin and Let's encrypt

Now that we understand the basics of SSL, Virtualmin , and Let's encrypt, we will take a look at the steps involved in installing an SSL certificate with them.

  • Log in to Webmin/ Virtualmin and select the domain that needs a certificate from the drop-down list near the top of the sidebar. We are using the domain example.com in our demonstration image.
  • Click on “Server Configuration” and then “SSL Certificate” (Figure 1.)
  • Select the Let's Encrypt tab on the SSL Certificate page. (Figure 2.)
  • In the text entry box next to “Request Certificate For” you can either go with the default choices or use the “Domain names listed here” box to specifically name a domain to be used. e.g. If you just wanted a certificate for example.com then you would enter this in the lower text entry box.
  • Select the green “Request Certificate” button.
  • The SSL certificate will now be installed and activated for your chosen domain.
  • If the request fails, then you will need to figure out the error before retrying. Let's Encrypt will block you from continuing if you try too many times in a short time period. It is important to note that if the domain or sub domain do not exist then the request for a certificate will fail.

That’s it – your SSL certificate is now successfully installed and activated! You can now use it to help protect your website and keep your customers’ data safe and secure.
